Hi all, Ive got this horrible P.O.S cat that leaves hair all over the house. Its a Maine ****, long haired grey and black thing.

Just wondering if anyone knows any flies that use cat hair??

have used cats hair for thorax material on pheasant tail bodied nymphs before and have caught well on them, just make sure you feed the cat some of the trout leftovers you catch as a reward, all cats love trout

Default Cat's Ear

In Trout Flies, Proven Patterns Gary Lafontaine offers a variation on the GRHE nymph theme - made out of "grey tiger" cat fur. I presume that's like Tabby cat fur.
I like Tabby fur ( harvested from live animals!) - the guard hairs are pretty soft and easy to dub .

Haven't the faintest idea what your cat looks like though!

Cheers,

.D.

There is one full dressed salmon fly that calls for Blue Persian cat fur but I don't recall the dressing off my head.

Cheers
Alan.

"off your head" at 3.35pm Alan?

You need to lay off the hard stuff until at least 6pm.

Graham.

6pm! that late!

Cheers guys, might give something a bash tonight and let you see the results.

The hair on this thing is long and pretty soft so not sure what ill turn out like. Probably a good dubbing though.

Reminds me of a story. Might have read it on another board, but it was some time ago, and I don't remember all the details. Went something like this. Some guy's wife's cat was a perfect grey for Adams dubbing. Well, the poor cat died and the guy wanted to skin it. SWMBO did not approve. Seems there may be more than one way to skin A cat, but there was no way that guy was gonna skin THAT cat.

Anyway, Adams dries, muskrat nymphs and cut it to 1/8" and use as a mole sub for waterhen bloas. May not work for any of these, but that's what I'd do.

I've got a calico long-hair Maine **** cat, and I'd rather use her for Zonker strips than PETA-approved tying. However, I wonder if her hair wouldn't be good for Wooly ****** tails or used in some places for marabou.

I would have tried before now, but she has a temper and claws to match, hence the Zonker remark.

Hmm, sub for maribou might not be a bad idea. last time the thing got wet (no jokes please!) the hair got very "soggy" i suppose. abit like marribou. im sure id be able to die it too, clothes dye maybe?

Il see what i can do and let you see the results, once again no laughs please! lol or atleast dont laugh too hard.

Mike

Ps, theres a dead one burried in my garden, wonder if its still skinable!? lol
