I'm not sure why cork is still used, other than tradition. There must be better materials out there.

A golf grip is designed so that the club doesnt slip out your hand when the force of a down swing is put in ,don't think you would need this on a fly rod ,if you did you need your casting looked at ,ill stick to my cork thankyou
