Default Unofficial Weed Clearance

Hi Everyone,

My early morning walk to work takes me alongside the River Itchen. Not the most attractive part of the Itchen but it has a good head of roach, chub, grayling, a few pike and if you look hard enough some very nice trout, not huge trout but nice nevertheless. It would not be unkind to say that during the summer months the river weed takes over along with bull rushes etc. This provides habitat for plenty of wildlife including water voles etc.

Last week I noticed that the weed that grows in the water but has stems aand flowers a good 10-15 inches above the water appeared to have been trampled flat and cut stems were piled on the pavement. Imagine my surprise when just an hour ago I see an oriental man and woman with a large rake hauling the weed onto the pavement and stuffing it into large bags. I recognise them as owning the local Chinese Takeaway.

My first thought was the river is getting choked with whatever this weed is so why worry. But on the other hand it is habitat to coots, moorhens etc.

I don't know what the weed is but I suspect it must be edible considering how much of it they are taking.

I think a call to EA maybe in order but I would appreciate your views

Hi uptomyknee_s

From your description it's likely that they're taking watercress, which at this time of the year is growing to almost its fullest extent, benefiting the river by taking up where ranunculus has now died back, by pinching low flows and keeping decent velocities on the water.

Unless they're taking vast, industrial quantities, however, I doubt too much harm will be done. On the other hand, I came across exactly the same kind of "foraging" activity on the Wandle in Carshalton last summer, and hastily stepped in to let those involved know that they were collecting watercress about 50yds downstream from a misconnected surface water pipe which was then discharging a constant small stream of washing machine water and raw sewage into the river (despite the EA and Thames Water's best efforts to track the problem under a nearby housing estate).

I don't think the restaurant owners really understood what I was trying to say, however, so can only speculate how many food poisoning cases may have followed. Certainly I don't do oriental takeaways round here any more...

The problem is that unless you know what you are doing, watercress can be very easily confused with Fool's Cress - Berula - which is not nice at all and is certainly not good to eat. I would be very wary about eating watercress soup from THAT Chinese restaurant!

Thanks for your views Guys,

I am pretty sure it is not watercress although I stand to be corrected. There are quite a few watercress beds here in Hampshire and it does not look much like the stuff I have seen cultivated. I'll take a photograph of it tomorrow and post it up. It will also give you an idea of how much of it they are taking.

Never had a takeaway from the particular shop and somehow I don't think I will be visiting anytime soon

Hi Bruce,

It looks very much like it, may have white flowers though. It is not controlled by an Angling Club. It has been fished for over 45 years by local children. It was where I learned to fish.

It really is not much to look at but it has roach to a good 1lb and chub to about 2lbs. Plenty of bonny trout but as I said in my first post you just have to look for them
