Andy Murray is a hell of a character. He works as an international sales manager for Hardy Greys, so it's not fair to think that all Andy does is to gallivant around the world with a fly rod in his hand…quite! Truth is that Andy's job takes him on some of the most delicious assignments known to an angler. If you look at his diary for any upcoming year it's quite mouth-watering, the adventuring angler's dream. But Andy is a man of substance and revealed himself in his first DVD, "The Basic Skills of Spey Casting" as a warm, charismatic teacher. That DVD put many of us on the right road and the level of Spey casting rose appreciably as a result.

Now Andy has followed this up with a second DVD, "The Hardy Advanced Skills of Spey Casting." Andy immerses us into the highest forms of the art. After a brief recap of the basic spey casts we are then introduced to the Circle C, the Snap T, the Snake Roll and Side Spey casts. What Andy pulls off magnificently though is to put these casts well into context. They are nailed to distinct fishing situations - what to use in an upstream or a downstream wind, where there are overhanging trees or high banks. In short, Andy gives us the right cast for any of the troublesome conditions we are likely to meet on our way.

This DVD is a real confidence booster. It really will help you look at a situation, however awkward, and come up with the right attack method and one you feel wholly confident in using.

The filming generally is decent and all the casts are looked at from different angles to make the technique crystal clear. If I do have a complaint it's that the quality of reproduction is not quite as high as it is in some other productions and the film tends to be grainy and slightly jumpy at times. But this is a minor criticism. This DVD is almost an essential casting aid for beginners and improvers alike. If you only fish for salmon one or two weeks a year it's the ideal refresher course before setting off on your trip.

And the DVD will give just a taster of what Andy's life is like…the Kola, the Tweed, the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco, oh to work for Hardy!
