Angling with the flyAngling with the Fly by J N Watson

(Flies & Anglers of Derbyshire and Staffordshire)

For anyone remotely interested in fly fishing the Derbyshire and Staffordshire area of the UK this book is a must have publication. The author John Watson explores the history and development of fly fishing there from the 17th century up to the present day. Within its 352 pages are superb references to what flies to use month by month extracted from the notebooks of anglers whose names are part of angling history. There are over 400 fly patterns listed, many with their dressings. 150 flies have been commissioned and tied by Tim Thorpe to illustrate the book as well; these have been photographed superbly by Terry Griffiths the editor of Flydresser, the journal of The Flydressers Guild. In Chapter 4 entitled Anglers of Influence, it describes how people such as Izaak Walton, James Ogden, William H Foster, The Marquess of Granby and others developed angling methods, refined their tackle and created fly patterns to match the naturals observed and noted by them in great detail even down to the influence of the weather conditions. For those of you that have never visited or fished the Derbyshire or Staffordshire area, Chapter 6 entitled Rivers and Streams has a whole host of information with hand drawn maps and good photography of some of the pools and weirs. Each river is described in detail, its course through the landscape and the recommended patterns to use.

Many years have been spent compiling this work and is a reflection of the author John Watson's 50 years of fascination with the angling heritage of the Dove and Derwent area.
