On The Fly - DVD review
With Christmas just around the corner we take a look at a new UK produced DVD that might be just the ticket if you are looking to introduce someone new to the wonderful world of fly fishing this holiday season!
'On the Fly' is a change of pace from the usual frenetic whirlwind of DVD-based action from around the globe. Instead this is a much more down-to-earth title perfect for a complete beginner or anybody interested in finding out what fly fishing is all about and therefore a real Christmas gift contender. I could also see this being a useful resource for anyone involved with teaching groups of young people for example about fly fishing.
The DVD is split up into over a dozen sections and follows a logical progression through such topics as how to buy your fishing licence, how fish farms raise trout, buying your first tackle, going fishing for the first time through to the final subjects covering how to gut and clean a trout followed by a simple recipe on preparing your catch for the table.
There is some interesting underwater footage included that you do not often get to see such as trout approaching a fly and my favourite of a diver hand-feeding some large stockies who are certainly not camera shy - it looked like one of those coral reef feeding sessions from the telly when all the sharks turn up! A rare sturgeon also makes an appearance while they are filming underwater.
Host Andrew Hutson (better known to Fly Forum members as Andy345) is obviously very knowledgeable and passes on the information in a very calm and precise style. It's always a challenge catching fish for the camera and its nice to see that there was no pretence made about the fact that it was hard fishing sometimes and changes had to be made to finally come up with the goods.
Including interviews with the Environment Agency and the Angling Trust is a useful exercise also as new anglers (and a lot of older ones) need to understand the roles they play in our sport.
In fact proceeds from this DVD will be helping to fund some new educational projects for youngsters according to Executive Producer and Narrator Kevin Glancy of Terrain TV. "Terrain TV are proud to support the Angling Trust and also encourage fishing as a sport for the young people of today. Every sale of our DVD will help us to continue to raise the capital needed to do this as we will be investing in various promotions over the next 12 months."
'On the Fly' costs £20 with free shipping included and can be ordered from their website at http://www.onthefly.eu/buy.php
