Hardy Marksman Rod 10' #4
Review by Simon Young
New from Hardy and Greys Limited for 2007 is the Marksman range of Rods and reels. The rods range from a 6' #2 to a 10' #5.
So lets take a look at the 10' #4 Marksman.
Appearance and first thoughts
Now you may associate light line rods with lengths of 8' or under, but at 10' long this medium fast mid tip action rod is absolutely perfect for light stillwater, most river situations and even light line fishing from a boat with small nymphs and dries.
The 4 piece blank is finished in a High Gloss Dark Olive varnish with Ultra Light rings fitted.
Included with the rod are Nickel Silver plugs to fit the female ferrules of the blank sections just like the Hardy rods of yesteryear, the quality cloth rod bag even has a small pocket to take them.
The Nickel Silver reel seat is a rather unusual affair, it is hollow and drilled for lightness.
This weight saving philosophy has even been extended to the carrying tube which is a Cordura covered custom Carbon Composite one!
Performance and Opinions
With its extra length and mid tip action it makes the ideal tool for Czech Nymphing, allowing you to easily track the progress of your flies with little flyline beyond the rod tip. With more line out from the tip ring the length allows for easy line control ie upstream or downstream mends are performed with ease. This rod really is a pleasure to cast with, using a WF4 floating line and a leader of 5lb 9' long with 2 fairly heavy nymphs only 2' apart it was very easy to control the cast, performing tight loops where required to put the flies under overhanging bushes or by slowing the cast down upstream close in tactics were possible. The mid tip action also made hooking fish either at distance or close in a breeze, a simple upward flick of the wrist was all that was required .
To quote from Jeremy Lucas (England Team Member)
" What a glorious blend of functionality, design and aesthetics. The reel is exquisite while the rod is simply faultless. How fortunate we are nowadays to have such products in our sport made from materials to match our needs."
