Snowbee Travel Vice for Fly Tiers On The Move
Simon Young takes a close look at this new for 2012 Travel Vice from Snowbee and puts it through its paces for us.
Our new, lightweight Travel Vice is a beautifully engineered piece of kit, with some innovative design features.
Packing down into a neat moulded Carry Case, measuring just 9½” x 8” x 2”, the kit includes a small, heavy pedestal base into which the main vice head stem fits. The Vice head is precision engineered from lightweight Aluminium and offers a full rotational facility, which can be easily adjusted for tension, or locked up completely, if not required.
The hardened steel jaws have an adjuster screw at the tip, for primary adjustment and then a quick, simple cam-lock lever, to set the hook. This powerful system offers a 4.5:1 purchase, allowing any size of hook to be held securely. The entire jaw assembly can be slid up or down, by means of a simple grub screw (allan key supplied) so adjustment can be made, depending on the gape of the hook. This allows complete rotational symmetry along the centre line of the main rotating shaft.
For the travelling angler, where weight is all important, the heavy pedestal base can be left behind, as the carry case has an ingenious 2nd stem mount, moulded into the corner. In this mode, the entire kit weighs just 490g (overall weight, including base 1227g).
If you are one of the many flyfishers that now travel away from home and always gets worried that you haven’t got the “correct” patterns then this excellent piece of kit from Snowbee could be the answer.
All packed into a neat 9.5”x 8”x 2” sturdy case it has the option of a heavy metal pedestal base or a fitment in the corner of the case to take the vice stem, the latter is a great idea if weight is an issue if flying away anywhere these days, just leave the base plate behind which keeps the weight to just under 500g including the case.
The rotating cam lock vice jaws will hold all hook sizes securely and are adjusted by a neat thumbscrew, I even used it with 3/0 Gamakatsu saltwater models, for extreme sizes of hook either minute or extra large the jaws can be adjusted to bring the hook shank inline with the rotational axis of the head with the supplied allen key, there are also a couple of spare O rings supplied.
If you like to use a bobbin holder cradle then one is included in the kit along with a spring material clip. The head of the vice will rotate smoothly in both directions so can be used by both left and right handed tiers unlike some much more expensive alternatives that have to be ordered especially for left handed use!
If you have never used a vice with a rotating head I can certainly recommend you try one as it makes tasks such as winging ,putting cheeks or eyes on Salmon or Saltwater flies so much easier.
There is plenty of spare room in the case to take a few small bits and pieces i.e. packets of hooks, etc.
