Default Trout and Salmon - Total Disrespect

It stills niggles me when I read this months (Jan 2017) edition of the Trout and Salmon.

On page 102 it publishes an obituary (HALF A PAGE) to Bruce Sandison, by Orri Vigfusson who eloquently portrays a summary of Bruce's life and achievements, highlighting his role as a defender of our West Coast Salmon. The first sentence reads as follows.

''THE DEATH of Bruce Sandison has robbed the Wild Salmon of Scotland of one of their most fierce defenders. More than anyone else, Bruce opened our eyes to the perils produced by Salmon Farming''

Trout and Salmon in their wisdom, decided to dilute and almost combat this obituary by publishing a TWO PAGE article (page 50) in the same edition, Entitled, ''A Case For The Defence'' by Dr Martin Jaffa, a supposed independent advocate of the aquaculture industry. I will not go into the contents of this article, but would ask all forum members to read this. In essence, he is given a TWO PAGE platform to defend his industry.

To me, it beggars believe that Trout and Salmon could be so insensitive to the feelings of its Scottish Readers, and to all who oppose Salmon Farming (West Coast or otherwise) to publish this article within the very same edition as Bruce Sandison's obituary, and demonstrates to me the total lack of respect that an English Publication has shown towards it's Scottish readers.

Well ok.

I got Trout and Salmon last month, i have no idea who Bruce is and I saw but didn't read the 'case for the defence' because we all know that there isn't one. I don't read fishing magazines for politics. But I will now read both.

But why, if this is an English bias as you seem to imply, isn't there a Scottish magazine putting the matter straight?

Before Christmas I had a couple of trips north of the border , Inverness mostly. I was in digs, and whenever I was in a supermarket I looked out for a mag to pass the time - I never normally bother with them. I would have had a T&S, or FF&FT, couldn't find one anywhere. Carp w4nker mags were falling off the shelves

We've had threads on this issue in the past - it's a common problem with the big UK supemarket chains - Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons - they all do it. I contacted my nearest Morrisons in Edinburgh about it. It seems that all UK branches get their mags based on UK-wide circulation figures and, like it or not, the carp w4nker mags sell more copies than T&S and FF&FT. You would think that when the Scottish branches send back thousands of unsold carp mags every month the penny would drop and they would do something to change things, but no...

My local store is an Asda - it's exactly the same - Total Carp, Angling Times, Sea Angling, etc - no T&S.

I'm not an apologist for the magazine, but I am a regular contributor to it, and as such, I'm in regular contact with the editor and other staff, and I have a rough idea of the way things work there. They like to present both sides of any argument, and I suspect they would have had the Martin Jaffa piece laid out, graphics done, all lined-up and committed to the January issue from some time back. Obviously, the Bruce Sandison obituary required inclusion in the latest issue, and so it has become slightly unfortunate that such opposing attitudes should share the same issue... is my guess.

PS: I've told the folk at T&S about the supermarket sales thing - it's all Bauer Media behind it these days - I don't know if they have tried to do anything about it. I'll ask again.

I can understand the angling times & sea angling thing, but the carp stuff left me a bit puzzled.

My comment, which wasn't meant to take Douglas's thread off topic was really to take up Tangled's point. If the Scottish retailers can't even serve the demographic properly, you can see why there isn't a Scottish publication that represents the true nature of the fishing up there.

For sure. There have been a few different Scottish-centric magazines over the years, but they just don't get a big enough circulation to keep them going for long. Isn't 'Fly-Fishing & Fly-Tying' (not one I buy) based in Aberfeldy?

The thing about the "Scottish Retailers" is that they are not Scottish - they are simply the Scottish outlets of the "Big Four", and they take their orders from head office.

Distribution seems to have no logic. In most (but not all) Derbyshire supermarkets there are no fly fishing magazines but more than one sea fishing magazine. I'm not sure any English county is further from the sea.

Thankfully my local Coop has T&S. But I agree whilst a balanced approach is understandable the Jaffa article was not far off an advertorial and not a great idea. Two pages without space for a response was a shike idea.
