Default On the Lake today 22/11/19

Good day for birds.Started of with a red kite on the way.probably near Rusky. Then just before turning into lake car park .big flock of fieldfare/redwing.Getting tackled up on the beach.GS woodpecker.flew across.Mixed flock of finches hanging about the scrub/woodland.at the back of the car with a sparrowhawk checking them out. lots of Goldeney all over lake, with still lots of GC grebes about.with small amounts of L Grebes making life difficult as i cast at what I though were rising fish.A few tuffties and a few Goosanders.fair amount of Cormorants (about 30) a large flock of mistle thrushes having a feast on fallen apples.in a garden by the lakeside.Plenty of Greylag/Pinkfoot/Canada geese. and just as I came ashore a huge amount of corvids obviously heading for a roost Mostly Jackdaws and rooks Possibly 1500.I would love to find the roost.

PS forgot the herons and ravens which were about all day.

That's a huge flock of rooks, I've never seen that many, our local flock is around a hundred I guess. Hearing the rooks and jackdaws calling and watching them gather to roost is one of my favourite natural events, regular as clockwork each and every day, often a nice reminder to get back to the house after working outdoors.

Mark Cocker's book Crow Country is worth buying if you haven't read it, I bought it straight after hearing it reviewed on Radio 4 as it chimed with the way I feel about these birds, he's put a huge amount of time into studying rooks and writes well.

You’re not alone Jim,dabbies must be the best trout rise imitators of the lot.The weight is spot on for an average “rise” and if you are looking into shadow or shade it’s hard to see the little sods sitting on the surface before they dive, especially from a distance...:

It was also the biggest flock I've ever seen at one time.
I have 2 winter roosts near me. both large and as you say regular as clockwork they stream in from the surrounding countryside making a fair racket.I love it.I'll check out the Book.
