You beat me to it Jim! I checked the thread and saw Scott's photos of his LiPO set-up were missing, due to Photobucket. However, I remembered sending them to a guy who was interested in the set-up, so I fetched them up...

    Here they are...

They are certainly not all the same. I used to use cheap brands such as 'UK Giant' and 'Numax', and never got more than about a season and a half out of any of them. You can tell the difference if you lift one in each hand - the Bosch/Halford's ones have way more lead in them! My first Halford's 115 AH lasted a full 5 seasons, and I 'retired' it before it let me down. However, the next Halford's I got started this year going into its 3rd season, and it failed to last the day a month or so back - unheard of for a Halford's 115 AH! It was still just within the 2 year guarantee, so I took it back and they replaced it with a new one - no questions, no quibbles. I noted the guarantee doesn't renew with the replacement - oh well...

Interestingly, a new type of car battery has appeared on the scene - ones designed for modern cars with stop-start technology - I have one in my Yeti.

From my previous experience I think Halfords is quite good and fairly honest. But some of these places aren't.

I use a lot of batteries for all sorts of portable things and have found many that don't meet their specs. There are some specialised extremely high power delivery lithium batteries which have specifications from cloud cuckoo land. EG the 'C' rating, which is the ratio of the AH of the battery to the continuous amps that can be delivered. Some claim 100C (which is 400 amps continuous from a 4 AH pack) but if you do it they only last about ten cycles, though they claim 40-50 cycles at that power.

As for Yuasa lead-acid I have a small (7 AH) 12 volt sealed one used to drive a starter motor on a lawnmower and despite being ignored completely, being allowed to go flat and left that way for months and so on (the mower doesn't have a built in charging system) it's still fine after 9 years. And on the strength of that I have purchased Yuasa car batteries and they last far longer than claimed.

BTW: When I posted I was also thinking about stop-start batteries but I didn't mention them as I didn't want to over-complicate the issue.
