OP, if you can genuinely cast 30yds as a novice I take my hats off to you, you are very talented. However, if you do not take out a 100ft tape measure, you are likely to be in the rest of the camp = over-estimating unless you know the full length of your line and you are throwing it all out.

Cast 12 feet less, the leader turns over 12 feet, your flies land in the same place but start fish straight away.

    It bypassed you.

Did anyone consider that it may have been a simple typo and the whole forum is on his back. He had a look in this morning, I expect he is delighted with the helpful responses.

    Okay, here goes:

    To the OP

Asking for casting advice on here is akin to seeking psychiatric help by posting your dreams and fears on Facebook. You'll get lots of opinionated amateurs, folk lore, incorrect and downright useless advice. There may be some professional and useful answers but it would be difficult to sort through the dross. If you want professional help, go to a professional organisation. I'll list a couple below but if you let people know what area you live, you might get some personal recommendations. There are also some of the resident professionals details from this site :

You will find that professional lessons the best decision you have made after deciding you are going to fly fish.
