Novice. Been Fly Fishing for a year. Slowly understanding casting. Was nice a old boy at my local lake was watching me .said my back stroke was going to far back.instantly improved my cast.
Im getting the haul part sorted casue I some times chuck big flies for pike.
Im struggling to get past 30 yards. My cast just seems to end in a big heep. Up to 30 yards i can get it to fly out.
The harder i try the messer it gets.
I think some lessons are on the cards.
Think its all cause I'm not watching my back cast ??????

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) I can cast quite a distance but it's not pretty. I see all ages at the lake where I fish and 99 percent make it look effortless and it's a pleasure to watch. I have just booked a 2 hour tuition session with a pro, I suggest you think about doing the same before the bad habits become to hard to break.

joshandmurphy, do you know how long your fly line is? Your fly line is most likely less than 30yds.

I've been fly fishing for very close to 50 years, I am a casting instructor, qualified as such for some 10 years, a regional representative for the Game Angling Instructors Association. In a fishing situation, I cannot consistently cast well to 30 yards plus.

    Two things;

    1. Buy a 100ft measuring tape
    2. Get some lessons

30 yards!? If you mean 30' then maybe get some lessons.... if it really is 30 yards then you should be giving them!

30 yards = 90 feet, the length of most lines, you see the backing in the rings at this point, a long cast by anyones standards.

30' though would be strangely limited, most beginners need at least that just to get the rod to bend

I'm not sure about this.Either you have no idea how far 30 yards are or your taking the P.

It's the best written William Shatner impersonation. I have ever seen.

I mark my casting line at 15 yards, then 20, then 25, then 30, then 35 (it's a saltie line) 1 stripe, then 2 etc up to 5 at 35 yards.

Add 3 yards for the leader and tippet and to get a full line out past the tip ring, = 38 yards or 115 feet.

I also cast in the most challenging of conditions, 99% saltwater.

Ive had lessons and fish with very good casters, who have helped me no end.

In ideal conditions, with a diddy fly few casts goes the whole line. Rack on a clouser or deceiver and a bit of wind, I struggle to stripe 3 (80 feet or so),

And Ive been doing this for close on 20 years.

Slow learner with a realistic measure?
