Default G loomis glx 6# distance

I've always thought technique was everything, but I cast 5ft of backing of the reel, on my second cast with someone's glx distance 8# with a floating line ! On my second cast and I had to be less forceful as there was no fly attached ! I can on a good cast normally only manage the full fly line and no backing on a rare cast! My question is this I'm only geared up for 6# ! Would I cast as far with the glx distance 6# as I did with his 8# ? As, if I buy a distance, I don't want to have to buy new lines etc!

    In a fishing scenario "NO"

The #8 weight will turn over bigger flies and wind resistant flies easily, it will also cut through strong head and side winds.

The #6 is good in "perfect " conditions or for top if the water techniques.

Glx'ds are in my opinion the best rods ever made, but do require you to use 1 line size heavier if you want to get the best out if them.

For an allround reservoir or competition rod a #7 glx-d is almost impossible to beat especially using #8 weight lines

Thanks , I've just ordered the glx-d , 6#,. I'll check it out with different lines. I've also ordered a DVD by the bfcc distance casting group. As I'd like to improve my technique . And maybe travel to one of the events, I'd love to see someone cast 140 ft or more with a full line!

I have the 10 ft, #6, it's an absolute casting beast. I normally pair it with a #6 Cortland 444 but it can easily handle a #7 line too. Be careful with the tippet you use with it, don't go too light, the rod has incredible reserve power and big fish can use it against you.

I've never seen or heard of a GLoomis GLX "D" in the USA.

Does anyone know which USA model this is? From photos I found on the internet, they look like the original GLX Classic fly rods except the accent stripe is not blue.

Talking Re: G loomis glx 6# distance

It's my understanding that the G.Loomis Glx-d was never made for the US market when it was released.

    All are 10ft

As you say the accent strip on a Glx-d is red metalic rather than blue metalic

It was aimed solely at the European market.....I still think that's the case

The original models were 2 piece (the best version ) now everything is 3 piece

The original rods had very poor tip rings and you could wear them out in a month or so with a Di-7 .....I was sending a rod back every 4- 6 weeks in the early days and repeatedry asked for the standard glx rings to be fitted throughout. ...to date it never happened although the top 2 rings were upgraded on all models after 18 months of sending rods back this solved the problem .

Basically it's just a much faster actioned Glx. ... ( I have 2 x glx and 2 x glx-d's all in 7 and 8 weight and use them all at least once a week so can easily compare them)

Its still the ultimate casting or competition rod on the market in my opinion. ....with the Glx the best all round pleasure fishing rod...Sage Tcx, Sage one or Orvis Helios just don't come close for me

    Hi Steven,

Thinking you can buy distance is a plan for spending lots of money in the tackle shop with not much in the way of results

Generally speaking a #7 outfit will go further than a #5 or a #6 and so on until the weight starts to effect the speed at which you can move things.

You should definitely come along to a BFCC meeting, I can't guarantee 140ft casts but if the weather is good there should be some there who will cast a #5 weight over 40 yards

When I phoned loomis usa and sage was told 9ft is the most popular length of rod sold confirmed by both companies. 10ft rods are rare in the USA. Even getting a 10ft sage was told it's a great Steel head rod good luck etc. But for me agree with all of the above glx rods are still the front runners.

I don't like the nano stuff doesn't cast or feel the same.
