I use Barrio Smallstream and find it a decent line that is well designed for short casts. Well worth a punt - not a magic wand but for it definitely helps along with the techniques described above.

Used my Barrio Smallstream last night to good effect, caught the bank/trees several times!
On my soft, fibreglass rod, it does cast a short line well.
Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught and the last river poisoned, will we realise, we cannot eat money.

In the old days for brooks and small streams we used to cut a double taper in half and needle knot a step down leader.

... why the need to shoot line?

Also, practice: with a river outfit certainly, you should be able to cast the (tapered) leader and fly only.

Forget the “two line weights higher”; learn to cast. It is what the winter is for

Good call... The taper on this line is designed to load the rod with less line outside the rod-tip than most other lines without being an aggressive shooting-head profile. Totally recommended.
If you are wading and have some space available behind you then you could employ a switch-cast and feed some line out off the rod tip during the initial sweep of the set-up stroke. This takes a little bit of practice but is a very useful cast on small rivers.
