And yet I've caught a good number of chub on smaller streams, up to about 4lb and they gave a very good account of themselves too.

I have recently been catching tench to 6lb plus on coarse gear and they fight extraordinarily well , if not quite as manically as barbel - which outfight anything I've caught . Chub ? Some summer chub can be docile but hook a 4 or 5 pound chub in February and it will try to pull your arm off...

I've had plenty of (stocked) brown and even the odd rainbow which didn't fight but some fly anglers still like to affect lofty disdain for anything without spots . Mind you , the worst of all are the carping Taleban who regard fish such as bream and tench, and those of us who prefer to fish for them , as vermin

I caught a twelve pound carp on a light quiver tip yesterday about five yards out.....he must have been surprised because I just guided him straight away into the net.....

Imo some fish species fight harder than others, but they all vary depending upon size, their condition, weather etc etc . I do they however that middle sized beasties tend to fight harder than the big boys of the same species who tend to rely on weight. I have caught tench on light float tackle and would describe them as dogged, but have had them give up on ledgering kit. Bream on all but the lightest tackle, I find very docile ....I am being charitable...
Pound for pound, for freshwater species a four to eight pound blue trout or ghost koi can take some topping..

NB I have not fished for barbel so can't comment on them!

Brummie bonefish. You should have a try for them, they go like crazy. You never know if it's 3lb or 13lb until you see 'em. Great sport. I have a German friend who likes to catch them on the fly, he uses a shrimp imitation. Never tried myself, must get back on the Severn and see what happens. You would most certainly know that you had one on like that..................bn
Fear not if I steal from your side, as of yore, from paradise streams to fish Teifi once more.

Barbel fight like hell, from my coarse fishing days on the Kennet......as did the Chub, Tench and even the Bream were different from their lake cousins. I've never caught any of them on a fly, as yet......did once catch a Tench on floating crust. I've caught Carp, Perch, Roach and Rudd on fly tackle and they all seem to fight a bit harder (lighter tackle?).

I have caught a number of tench off the surface over the years when surface fishing for carp, i suspect it would be possible to target them using dry flies or bread imitations.
