    Default Best barbel baits?

We have no end of groundbaits, boilie flavours and sizes to choose from, and a vast array of pellets, dumbells, wafters, bing bangs, ding dongs, chong chings, boppers, bippers, flippers, dippers, whizzers, goo, glugs, sprays and wherever else you can think of. Then there are more traditional baits like tinned Hot dogs, Peperami & Luncheon meat - aka spam, is supposed to be good.

With so many options available, which one - in your opinion - is the most likely to catch barbel. (Did I mention pastes)

Halibut pellets are superb. BUT i have some luncheon meat made now over 10 years ago to celebrate some French thing soaked in garlick, barbel loved it.
Sadly down to my last 2 tins so after that back to halibut pellets.
I superglue 2 pellets on a hair rig works wonders. Loose feed a few pellets just to get them searching and gaining confidence

Sweetcorn is fine but overused iMHO

    Just my thoughts

    It does work

Natural baits in the daytime , worm , casters and maggots , come dark then smelly baits like meat and pellets . My best Barbel came from meat laced with garlic , just before sunset .

Back in the day, before all the new fangled stuff came about we used hemp and casters through a swim feeder, about 6 casters on the hook to avoid the small stuff,

Agree Danny my french garlick meat is a killer after dark. Odd pellets seem to be taken better for me during the day though.

Halibut pellets soaked in halibut oil or meat covered with Robin Red powder and then put in the freezer so that is gets absorbed. I put what's left after a days fishing back in the freezer and re use next time.

Cheers lads, I had not thought about day and night baits, or using corn. I have just got into barbel fishing. Caught a 9 pounder on spicy sausage pellet, lost an even bigger one taken on a double dumbell pop up, mixed fruity fish flavour.

Its very hard going though, the average so far is about 3 weeks per barbel, but bream galore which are better than nothing I suppose. Trying to find a bait that you have confidence in and the barbel like more than anything else is not easy.

This is the stinky garlick meat, cannot find it now if you find any old tins grab them. Alternatively get the most smelly garlick paste you can find plastic bag and place meat in bag. Shake bag to cover all the meat and freeze it will draw smell and flavour into meat. And as linkledger whats left after fishing refreeze work well again.

If you can find it, I found some in b&m bargains, try the smokey bbq spam, it absolutely stinks! Never heard of it before, hope it's going to become a regular, smells very garlicky.
