    Default Stakes & faggot bundles

Hi all - some of the features on our club water are deteriorating. Any suggestions as to where in the Hertfordshire/ Bedfordshire area we might be able to buy stakes and faggot bundles to supplement those we make during our working parties?

    Cheers
    Richard

Make your own, I have stabilised sand dunes with home made faggots from bundles of willow , so I suppose it would work for river banks, I would use larch or Oak for stakes , shouldn't be too hard to find , good Luck easker1

You could try your local hedge layer and there's a Facebook hedge laying group if you can't find one.

Hedge layers often buy in stakes from coppice workers, as it speeds up their laying.

If you want to have timber permanently in the water, Elm is the species traditionally used for water races and wheels, as it's durable when submerged.

Try asking your local tree surgeons for while they’ll want the larger sections for logs, the smaller stuff is generally just chipped.

Look up Greenfix who make and supply faggot bundles in three different materials - chestnut, hazel and willow. The willow is live which is fine for non-fishing bank applications as it will grow and provide excellent root sytems to bind the bank together. On the other hand it will need periodic maintenance.

Hazel is OK, but chestnut is far & away the best. That gets used in some estuarial situations on account of its durability.

Go to the agricultural merchants for the stakes. I've been using the round 2 -3" ones for a few years and they hold up well until the silt accumulates and firms everything up. About £2 each from Mole Valley and easy to bang in.
