Default Week (or perhaps 5 days) trip to Europe on a budget.

    Hi all,

Am thinking of avoiding any 'surprise' birthday parties for a big-ish birthday next August and fancy a bit of fishing recluse in Europe as a treat. As it is by no stretch a family holiday I need to be really savvy cost wise. Cheap flights, cheap (but secure) accommodation, not overly expensive but good fishing and preferably in scenic surroundings.

I know Scotland, Ireland & Wales are in Europe but would like to head to somewhere a bit more 'foreign'.

Does anyone have any experience in trips like this / any ideas or recommendations / do's & dont's etc ? Maybe I could look at getting a guide for a couple of days through personal experience ?

Any suggestions or starting points etc kindly & gratefully welcomed regarding any of the above points / what tackle to take or leave behind - you get it

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

    Jon

You should try the Czech Republic. Great fishing, great weather, very very cheap and the beer costs about 50p a pint!

Would love to go there but it's all the questions involved in the previous post (how's, why's and wherefores etc ).

Not worried about beer prices - rather spend the money on food tbh after a days fishing with an early start the next day as well

Although i live in Scotland and think it's a wonderful place for fishing, i'm going to be a little unpatriotic and say to you don't discount Ireland so easily it's a special place to fish with some of the best people in the world, i've had wonderful trips there, where you can fish a lough basically to yourself all day, or if Salmon is your thing, rivers like the Moy can be fantastic at times.

I've only actually fished in Austria when traveling around Europe, but that wasn't a planned trip, i ended up in a place called Pertisau which had a wonderful lake and i sneaked off for a day (as you do).

    Have fun wherever you decide.

    Best regards
    Jim
The fishing has been so hard lately, that even the liars aren't catching anything

Thanks Jim, I'd love to fish in Ireland and have visited a few times (Black Rock & Greystones rugby clubs mainly albeit) - would like to go somewhere 'new' even though I never cast a line in Ireland, I hope to fish there on a family driving holiday in a couple of years though - fantastic folk and hospitality without doubt

Jon, I think Walker made a good point re Czech Rep .. and you could also look at Slovakia as probably less fished in comparison to CZ.

While I can't (won't? ;-) ) check the Ryanair website for you, they fly from the UK to both countries, so that's cheap. Lodging is reasonable in both locations, as is the sustenance - and the fishing ain't dear. Scenery? Loads of that.

For CZ, Jan Siman would be able to sort you out with guiding if you want it, and permits, accom ideas, and kit if you need it. He has a profile on here, or just google his name for his website.

For Slovakia, I have a couple of contacts but they're not professionals, so if you're interested in that idea then I suggest you have a look at the posts re the current MIPS (?) competition over there and then ask the poster/s for contacts. There is some fantastic fishing there, and if it's August, the altitude will mean a cooler experience than in CZ.

Your plan is just my kind of thing for avoiding occasions like that, so good luck with it!

p.s. I'll hopefully be doing some diy grayling bashing on the river Hron (Slovakia) in a few weeks time, so hope to gather some more info while there.

I also forgot to mention that in some of the rivers you have the chance to catch brownies, wild (apparently) rainbows, brook trout, grayling, and Danube salmon (hucho hucho) .... what a feast!

Admin & language can be a bit of a nightmare, but you have plenty of time to sort that out.

Cheers, and have fun planning ... the anticipation is all part of it !

West coast Eire. Based in Galway city. Everything you ask for and more. Fish for Sea Trout and Salmon-not expensive and the music in the city when you get back. Nothing compares.

I spent a happy week about 10 years ago fishing here...

    Fly Fishing the Touvre

Quite an incredible river, 100m wide chalk stream, full of fish and plenty of fly life. Locals fish very small CDC's (F-Flys and similar).

Access is tricky, best point is the bridge at Magnac Sur Touvre.

Plenty of cheap accommodation in Angouleme, I stayed in a room over a bar for about 20 euros a night.

    Cheers
