Not very warm at all, it was 0°C and snowing yesterday but is set to get warmer Thursday/Friday. The river is now dropping down to normal levels after the late floods.
One of our usual visitors landed her first salmon yesterday at 14.5kg and had been fishing under 2 hours (Unfortunately not a catch and release angler )

The forecast has now changed and temperatures are going to be 14°C-21°C from Wednesday on (here in Aavasaksa at least)

Midnight in Aavasaksa on the Torne River.
Tell the missus you're "going fishing for the day" and you won't have to return home until August

Although salmon are being caught it is slow going. The river is still in second flood and the main body of fish have not started to move up river yet, as can be seen from the Salmon echo counter at Kattilakoski.

Annikki has now landed 3 salmon 8kg, 10kg and 14.5kg.
Some of our Russian guests have landed 7 salmon from the boat on lure.

Half way in to the salmon season here on the Torne river and so far it has been a hard time on the banks. There are not a lot of people catching salmon and the fish count is down considerably.
It would seem the Finnish are determined to ruin all salmon fishing possibilities in Finland! For every step forward they take towards conservation they then take 3 steps back

The grayling fishing on the other hand has been fantastic! Plenty of 1kg+ fish being caught and some people have landed a few 10kg+ pike

Across the river and down the road a bit (70 km or so) into Sweden and the Kalix river has been fishing great. Plenty of big salmon coming out.

I was just up the week before last fishing the Teno/Tana and the Neiden - tough going with the late snowmelt but we managed a few small ones from the Neiden and one of the Teno's tributaries near Utsjoki. Beautiful area!

It is a beautiful area and river.
Hopefully the Teno fish population will have chance to recover now. Statistics are showing that fishing tourism (mainly from Finland) has more than halved this year on the Teno. This is due to being over fished in previous years and becoming increasingly difficult to catch and a dwindling salmon population.

We have seen a huge increase in fishing tourism as a lot of anglers who previously fished on the Teno are coming to the Torne river for the first time. The majority of these use the Scandinavian spinflyg (spin fly) technique, love it or it hate it works and catches fish.
As you mention, the late snow melt has made fishing very difficult and due to the low catch rates maybe they'll head back to the Teno next year.

This year it was permitted to fish in the Gulf of Bothnia with nets for salmon for the first time It doesn't take a genius to guess how this would affect the population. With the worst fish count in many years and less than a third of last years count so far it has caused major outrage.......... but cheap salmon in the supermarkets

Meanwhile, our guests Seppo and Annikki (in the first picture above) have returned for a second bout. After their first 3 weeks with us they had caught 6 salmon from 7-14.5kg and on their first outing this time landed a 5kg salmon within hours again
