    Default Western Canada

I'm just back form a holiday to Canada and managed to fit in a couple of days fishing. Initially, on the Oldman and Lvingstone Rivers in Alberta for cutthroats and cutbows and a close run with a bull trout:

then on to the Squamish and its tribs in British Columbia, where I caught some pink salmon and had another close run with some bull trout:

Stunning scenery & interesting waters that encourages you to want to cast a line.
There's more to life than just fishing....but I ignore them.

There has been a drought going on for months and there are forest fires all over. Coming back form the Alberta trip, it was like driving through fog because of the smoke from fires in British Columbia, hundreds of miles away. At that point, the parks officials had banned all outdoor fires and Off-Highway Vehicles in the area, the following week they closed some areas entirely:

Alberta Parks Fire Bans & Restrictions

In between the 2 fishing trips, we went to Banff and Jasper, then on to Vancouver and we had problems with smoke everywhere. There were fires alongside the road in the Glacier National Park and we could see helicopters bucketing while we drove.

You need an off road vehicle, I drove 30 km on gravel tracks to get back on to the highway. These big trucks are not like our Chelsea tractors, they are required to get about and the Canadians are very much into their outdoors life.

It's a hugely underrated destination but it would take a modicum of planning to organise a trip. Fortunately, I have friends out there.

Brilliant stuff Vince. Well fished also these rivers are far from easy. Brought back memories of the "range roads", great fun after some rain if you have the appropriate vehicle
