Guys thanks for all the replies they are appreciated.

I will certainly do my homework regarding safety especially if we do decide the kids will be going.

    Cheers Baz

Certainly there is risk everywhere these days. But before going to Mexico do your homework and make an informed decision.
that was a bit of an eye opener. No info on why not to use ferry ?

Not really Baz. I went across on the ferry from Playa Del Carmen for a bonefish Jolly.I was really there for the spring sailfish run and it was a good number of years ago.Long story but a good friend of mine had a business orientated connection in Playa hence the trip.My normal destinations for skinny water fishing were Boca Paila,Tulum and Punta Allen with a bunch of fishos.Wish I could be of more help except to say I did have some great fishing.Safety ? I do not know really except to advise common sense wherever you travel in these destinations.I have been going to Mexico for many years and there is undoubtedly a dark side but easy enough to avoid as sure you are street wise.

You seriously have to look at Boca Paila in the Sian Ka'an reserve, it has the best bonefish and permit fishing in Mexico.

I travelled with Thomas Cook staying at the Dreams Hotel in Tulum. My wife and daughter enjoyed two weeks of absolute fully inclusive luxury while I sneaked off fishing most days.

I caught Permit to 20lb and Bonefish just along the beach from the hotel but by far the best fishing in the world at Boca Paila just two hours drive south in a Taxi with my driver acting as my guide for the day for just $100 including his tip.

There were Tarpon and Snook along with the Jacks and Barracuda.

I can't recommend the hotel high enough, it's an american five star with six restaurants and lots of entertainment for the family. Look it up on the Thomas Cook web site although other agencies also go there. It's the most southerly of the hotels on the Yucatan but close to Coba and other historical sites if that is your thing.

Looked at these photos and book!

Speaking as someone who has fished there since 2015 and returning f4om a trip on Sunday I have never experienced safety related problems in Ascension Bay. Can't say the same about trips to Cuba however. I can only speak from experience and I felt completely safe and will return without fear. More chance of getting mugged in the street in Britain.. On the other hand, perhaps I should say it is terribly dangerous there to preserve the wonderful fishing for those in the know😀

    Many thanks Timmy,

With regards to safety, the hotels are really well guarded but at no time did we feel unsafe when out and about.

Car hire is cheap but make sure you book through your hotel to avoid being ripped off. Taxis are always the best option for day trips etc.

The Yucatan is a world away from Mexico city and the drug cartels. It like the UK, I'm happy to go to a new town like Whitby but I wouldn't wander too far in a large urban city like Birmingham or London.

The only danger in the Yucatan is too much sun and not wanting to come home........

I don't normally do this, but that really is awful handling of that permit, the finger behind the gill plate and just how far from the water the fish has been carried. A very bad example.
And the 2016 Nobel prize for physics goes to J.R. Hartley, who'd have thought a fly fisherman could re-write so many accepted laws Hidden Content

I believe the problem with the Cozumel ferries was an explosive device which detonated and another which was found and disarmed last year I think.

Ive enjoyed numerous trips to the Yucatan, although not in recent years but I'm worried it is a lot more risky than when I went some years ago. I'm sure I read on here recently that one of the fishing lodge owners/head guides from Punta Allen was shot in the head in the middle of Tulum?????

'There were shooting incidents in Playa del Carmen, downtown Cancun and Los Cabos in 2017. On 21 February 2018, an explosive device detonated on a tourist ferry operating between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, Quintana Roo. The explosion injured 20 people, including tourists. On 1 March, local authorities found an undetonated device on another ferry operating on the same route. The Mexican authorities are continuing to investigate the incident'
