We are certainly partial to cheeky place and river names in Wessex, what with Sandy Balls and the excellent River Piddle in Dorset. Incidentally the story about subtle changes to one or two village names in that river valley, eg Puddletown, in deference to Queen Victoria's sensibilities when she visited, is true....

Just got back. The river there in mid-summer is just about unfishable - surface weed across all of the river. The only clear spot was right under a tree. Yet they are still happy to give out fishing tickets at 5 for residents, 10 for visitors! The river at Fordingbridge on the recreation ground looked much, better but was full of kids and families when we went there with the grandkids on Sunday afternoon. Mid-week looked just as busy. You would need to get down really early to fish the morning or choose a wet day!
