    Default Orkney....

I have just been told I am doing a motorcycle rally in Orkney...be silly not to take a rod having gone that far. Any secret squirrel tips available please? Saltwater or fresh..... flounders on fly? Are there any bass up there? Seatrout will be past the best time I would think, but pollack if there are rocks to get out on - the pictures I have seen of Orkney you are stood 300 feet above the water!

Any pointers greatful - I will be on my little motorbike, so space at a premium.

Several years ago we made a purely sea fishing trip to Orkney. We found it hard going; fished all the 'listed' marks and had poor results. On a fly I think you would just need to cast where the wind lets you when the tide is right. We did fish one completely random beach and had a few fish, but this was down to luck. Just as we were about to leave we met a local angler that was quite open; from talking to him it was apparent there were better places than the 'known' marks. So my advice would be either find yourself a local guide or fish the lochs for browns.

The trouble is, I got in touch with a guide for trout fishing. I think he must have merchant bankers for clients because he wanted 600 for the day NOT 60, 600.... hence me asking about sea fishing, I can't spend that amount in 2 years let alone one day!

Try and get in contact with Alan Shearer,no not the footballer,if he cant take you I'm sure he will put you onto someone who can sort you out,at a lot less cost than you have been quoted.

Have you looked on the OTFA website. There is loads of info there. There is a guiding service advertised there at a rates of 140/day. If he cant help he can probably point you to others.

I'm also off to Orkney in September and I've got the same dilemma, Sea Trout or Brown Trout. I'll probably only manage a day away from the family, so got to make it count.

Nah there's something not right 20 to join the orkney angling association that entitles you to fish loads of lochs and use any facilities.

if you want to make it count, stick to the lochs. Unless you are going out with someone, there are too many variables with sea trout in the salt to have much chance of working it out in a day. Location, tides, wind, weed...seals...A week maybe.

Later on in the season the South end of Harray can produce mixed sport with Browns and sea trout. Good local advice is freely dispensed in the tackleshops.

Very tempted to head up myself late August.
