    whats the best route to take,old school for brilliance or new school for convienence

    old style of extracting eg bark plants ,
    or using todays modern dyes

    I do both. You can get great colours from each. For browns and other non spectrum colours natural dyes are best but a lot more effort is required. The brightest colours from synthetic dyes are gotten using leveling acid dyes. Sabraset dyes give the best synthetic dye black. The picture below is natural dyed mohair.

    I guess you could say that. The first synthetic dye was discovered in 1856. By the 1880's every country store sold packets of synthetic dyes. Halford's first book was published in 1886 and he included Crawshaw dyes which was later bought by Veniard.
