Default Campaign to save the River Itchen

Last week, Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd gave a speech at a meeting of Eastleigh Borough Council attended by around 500 local residents opposed to plans to build 5,000 new homes and a link road near the River Itchen, one of the country’s finest chalkstreams.

Mark stressed that the river is already over-abstracted and polluted with phosphates and called for a re-writing of the Local Plan to focus on water sustainability.

Earlier in the summer, the Angling Trust and WWF-UK hosted an event attended by cross party MPs, the Sports Minister Tracey Crouch and the Water Minister Therese Coffey to highlight the plight of the river.

Unhappy Re: Campaign to save the River Itchen

Hi everybody,
Didn't hear about this in advance of this post to the forum, seems very important to me, but seems to be under the radar, and I don't understand why. P lease read/respond/link this with the threads about Woodmill/Salmon Pool under the forum for 'Sea Trout', seems there's something happening here in Hampshire that hasn't made the headlines yet, ... let's see to it that these kinds of things become mainstream/front page if we can. The Itchen, like the Test, are hugely important to fly fishing, and deserve defending,
Best wishes to all,

I didn't live nearby the place but I am concerned with pollution. Does the community has a program for pollution in the community?

I fish a couple of stretches of the Itchen but this is the first I've heard of it! Where is the development planned?

Far enough upstream to impact a lot of water then

Absolutely yes Iain; there's good fishing all the way to the downstream boundary of the Lower Itchen Fishery at West End.
