Good to hear bats are doing well (though obviously you don't want them to spoil your fishing). I usually see one outside my back window, but this year I am seeing 2 or 3 at a time.

They don't seem to be able to avoid things coming at them - like your fishing rod. A few years ago we were staying at the Blue Bowl while fishing Chew and Blagdon, and there was a dose of bats with a roost inside the walls of the building - could hear them scratching around while lying in bed. One came into our room and we had right fun and games trying to guide it out. There was a big, slow-rotating ceiling fan in the room and it whacked the bat a couple of times - had to switch it off while we stood on the beds holding towels up, trying to direct it towards the open window - which it eventually found.

Next day another one came in - a mother carrying a baby. We didn't know she was there. She must have panicked or something during the night and dropped the baby. I woke up to the feel of something cold and clammy in bed next to me. It was a dead baby bat.

Here's my attempt to photograph the wee guy outside my back window...
