    Default Large Moth Name

    This big Moth landed on an oil rig i work on.A few people i work with was wondering it's name.

    It's a big beasties about 2/12 -3 Inches long.Anyone know it's name..Cheers all.

    Hard to tell from the picture but possibly a deaths head hawk. I believe there are three different species of deaths head and variations within those.
    There is also the Convolvulus Hawk moth which occurs occasionally, that's a biggie.

    I don't think it's a Death's Head moth, it looks like a female Convolvulus Hawkmoth, Agrius convolvuli

    It's a migrant so taking a breather on an oil rig would be consistent with its behaviour.

    The caterpillar looks like that of an Oak Eggar moth which lives in heather and eats bilberry shoots.

    @diawl bach is correct.

    It is a Convolvulus Hawk-moth.

    Death's-head H-m is a rarity in the UK and offshore waters (the other two species of Acherontia don't occur in Europe).
