    Default Pink Meadow Grasshopper

I was briefly host to a pink hopper, Chorthippus parallelus this morning, my daughter gave me a ring after finding one on her lawn and wondered if I'd like to see it.

This was in the suburbs of Cardiff, funnily enough she found one at Lands End about 5 years ago, I've never seen one in my life. Safely released at its original location after etc. it seemed happy enough in a jar chewing on some grass.

    Nice looking thing.

Isn't the pink colour only during the breeding season? Normally it is only a its back.
    Don't worry, be happy.

According to the literature the all pink hoppers arise from genetic mutation and quickly fall victim to predation due to their non existent camouflage. They're fairly rare and such the chance of two meeting up to mate is quite unlikely.

Didn't know that. I have a couple of pictures of the Meadow Grasshopper but they only have the pink on the back.

They make the news every now and then which is why I was so surprised when my daughter found her second specimen after a few years, it's quite a coincidence.
