    Default Surgeons knot keeps snapping

My surgeons knot used to never snap but now when I tie my tippet to leader using surgeons knot it snaps.I tie the knot with three turns.I pull it tight. Then I pull on the two lines and it snaps at the knot.

What has gone wrong? It used to always work.

What 2 lines are you joining (weight/dia. nylon/fluro), do you wet it to pull it tight?

What is critical is that you , wet it, pull it tight slowly, pull it so that both loops of the ring you have formed decrease at the same rate. One closing faster than the other can be a problem. I never bother with 3 turns, 2 works fine.

So if you have used it before with no problem, and all the above is still right, I'd be trying a different tippet. It could just be a plain bad batch ?

A surgeons knot is very reliable. Have you started using a dodgy 'high-tech' line and relying on the stated breaking strain instead of going on diameter?

Failing all the above mentioned you could try different knots try figure of eight or double uni knots , I've found different fluro different knots there's no one knot that works on all fluro.

Try this one. It's the strongest I've found so far...

I'm a fig 8 convert now, easy to tie, very neat and very strong.
Just remember to cut the length of tippet first or you end up trying to pull the spool through the loop.

    Hi,

Well quite often especially in the summer te tippets suffer from UV so maybe you left your spool exposed to sunlight and the problem is coming from the tippet material itself?

Surgeon knot is fast and reliable as long as you wet the tippets!
