Default Leader To Fly Line Connection

Hi All,

I'm new to fly fishing and have just started out this year, I'm writing this post hoping some of the experienced members could offer some advice.

I will be on small rivers and will be starting off fishing nymphs, dries and the duo on a x6 leader and tippet.

What are the best knots to use for when I have to change my leaders? I have a floating 5wt fly line which has a ready made loop and have been using the Greys 9ft tapered, I don't want to have to cut these at the butt section every time I swap them when using larger flies ect...

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Just use a simple loop to loop for connecting a tapered leader to the loop on your fly line. Look up " perfection loop " . Many shop bought tapered leaders have that loop anyway . At the fine end of the tapered leader add a 1.5 mm Riverge tippet ring , then you can add some level tippet as often you please and never cut down the leader when you change flies.

For fishing the duo you can just use straight through level line all the way , you don't need a tapered leader , the weighted nymph will straighten everything out as you cast. Say 7 ' of line for the dry, with + whatever length for fishing the nymph . Join the pieces with a two turn water knot .

Ps don't waste your time buying any tippet ring other than Riverge or Moser, it's a tiny detail but those two never cut the line .

Thanks for the advice,

Which size would you suggest? I've never used them before I've looked at the sizes ranging from 1-3mm I will be using x6 3lb tippet I would imagine the 1mm are fiddly to tie?

Regards,

Chris.

Hi,

I did read some of It but I didn't realise there were so many replies off the back of the post, I'm new to the site.

I'll have a read through them I'm sure I'll get the advice what I'm looking for.

1.5mm on 3lb . The trick is to thread them onto a safety pin for safe keeping. Then you just thread the leader through a ring whilst it's still on a pin , a tucked half blood knot , and job done

Try attaching furled leader finished with a tippet ring to your fly line and tie your attach your actual tippet to the ring. Will make life a lot easier. You can easily adjust make up of the actual tippet to suit needs/conditions and makes changeout simple task in the field/on the water.Contact Mr Trout a fellow forum member who will twirl up a furlie or two to suit your outfit.Give it a try.Well worth the effort. Then we can discuss letting you into the Furlie Club

Best JP
