Many moons ago I was shown how to tie the water/surgeons knot, I practised this for ages, used it ever since & remembered what I was told at the time. "Attention to detail & never rush, as in more haste, less speed". I've not had any issues with this knot, immaterial of what I have used for leaders/tippets/droppers. Better the devil you know eh?

I personally wouldn't put a hitch on the droppers, if you want droppers at right angles try this.

So how do you the attach the fly?
Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught and the last river poisoned, will we realise, we cannot eat money.

    That what I would've guessed.

If I don't use the figure of eight knot, I'd put in a tippet ring instead, easy to add or remove the dropper then.

Just tie a piece of tippet to the loop with whatever knot you use to tie flies on.
Not tried it but would probably stand off quite well.
