Default 3 Turn Water Knot (a/k/a Surgeon's Knot) for Droppers----Modified???

In the newest Airflo Stillwater video with Gareth Jones and Ian Barr, Gareth says he uses a 3 Turn Water Knot to tie his droppers, but he modifies it by doing something different with the final turn. He says this modification gives the knot a smoother profile and that in his testing it is also stronger.

In the video, he says he'll provide a close up instruction, but either they didn't get to it in the filming, or it got edited out of the video.

Anyone know what this knot is? If so, can you describe how to do it for me?

    Much appreciated.

    Thank you.

This very question is in this months Trout Fisherman mag.

They call it the "J" knot and include a tying diagram.

Or just use the figure of eight knot which is easy to tie and known to be strong.

Sit still and watch the river, it's all a part of fishing.

Faffy over complicated, bulky - and the dropper doesn't 'stick out'.

When i tested this knot against a regular 3 turn water knot i found it to be consistently weaker and no less a profile if anything the water knot is more compact.
Be sure to test it against your regular knot.

Ok, thank you for your replies.

I'm not a subscriber to Trout Fisherman, so can't access their description of the knot. Did they reference Gareth's comment in the Stillwater video? Is that what triggered the question and the answer?

Is it the same knot as in the video from Montana?

Curious. As I understood Gareth's comment in the Airflo Stillwater video (albeit it was short), it sounded like the first 2 turns were as per a standard 3-Turn Water knot, with the final turn being the modification.

The J knot as depicted in the video looks more complicated than I probably want to fiddle with. I don't typically have failures with my 3-Turn (or sometimes 4-Turn) Water Knots, so I'll probably stick with what I'm currently doing if that video is really what Gareth was referring to.

    Again, thank you.

    Cheers,

Also, curious (I know this has been discussed in prior threads): Do you typically add a half-hitch in the dropper after you've tied the Water Knot to help the dropper fly stay away from the main tippet? If so, above or below the Water Knot (I've read differing opinions on this point).

Some folks say that adding a half-hitch (a) doesn't actually reduce wrap-arounds of the dropper onto the main tippet and/or (b) negatively inhibits the action of the fly on the dropper.

    Your thoughts?

    Thank you.

    Cheers,

Never found the need to add another weak point by an additional knot.
