    Default Monnow Social 2008

    Hi All
Ok, it's what (some of you at least) have been waiting for!! The River Monnow Social is back for 2008. Regular visitors to the Monnow thread and attendees of last year's bash will recall that we drank beer, whisky and wine in beautiful surroundings, ate steak and even caught some fish. The experience is to be repeated this year between Fri 9th and Sun 11th May.

There will be a maximum of 22 places available (at this stage). The date is a week or soearlier than last year, but based on the day that Cranefly and I did for the WTT on the corresponding weekend, it wont make a great deal of difference!

Your hosts for the Weekend will be:

Cranefly - he of the inhuman ability to consume Whisky - apparently Sewinman has already conceded defeat on this particular challenge
TDA - he of well connected friends, a playboy's life style, and... free beer
Quicksilver - he of spawny b*st*rd luck when it comes to large salmonid fish - must be all those female hormones
    Myself - errr...

and of course Tom, our Chef-du-camp - think big peppered steaks, big breakfasts and a big heart

As with last year, the basic idea is that we will have a riverside camp at Longtown.

The cost will be kept to the same as last year: 90 per head. This will cover Camping costs, supper on friday & saturday nights and breakfast on saturday & sunday mornings; it will include your fishing for the weekend also. One day on the main stem and one on a wilder upper river beat. As with last year, any surplus will go straight to the Monnow Fisheries Association.

Last years event was excellent craic and many new friends were made. We hope for more of the same this year, with the addition of a few new faces. As an extra treat, no less a man than Spy1 will be coming along to give a bit of casting clinic and let us have a play with his rod, though judging on the experience of last year, you may feel more than happy to just sit, nurse your hangover and watch!

Fishing wise, things are not finalised but we will have some lovely water available, a mix of wild upper catchment and main stem. The idea is to secure a wide range of beats and keep them as lightly fished as possible so that nobody gets "sloppy seconds". For those of you who know the river system, well you know what to expect. For those of you who dont, have a look here:

There are some photos of last years social somewhere too but I cant seem to find them. Is suspect that the firewall has barred me from viewing Cranefly, resplendant in his boxers early in the morning

We have an initial list of interested people from last year's event but we will have a few extra rods available for this years event. Things being what they are, it is likely that some original names may not be able to attend or have to drop out. So if you are interested, please drop me a PM and we'll keep you posted on developments. Once we have a list of attendees, we will be asking for a deposit and then there will be a cut-off date after which we will open up the event to anyone on a waiting list.
