From what I have seen there is virtually nothing for the angler, so I for one will not be going. Having said that, fishing is poorly represented at the Countryfile show at Blenheim and shooting not at all, so I won't be going to that one either.

The latter seems to be aimed at people whose idea of a day in the country is a visit to the local park.

Fully concur Bob - nothing like the days of old with a proper fishing village. We went last year and I think there was less than half a dozen fishing outlets. The old story of outlandish rents being charged.

We went to the game fair last year and it was a good day out, but I agree, the angling was very disappointing. Not going this time as much more awkward to get to for me. If you're interested in all country matters it still looks worth it but set your expectations low for the fishing.

Dogs walked, (dog walker tee'd up; we've a blind one and it'll be too much for him I fear) rucksack ready, waterproofs in rucksack and I'm off to the Show.
I don't care what is and what's not represented; it's a great day out and there'll be enough for us (wife and me) and at least 12 of our pals to keep us interested for the day, not least the Ale and cider sellers.
I hope it's a rampant success and that folk turn up in their thousands; soon find out.
    See ya,

Great day; just home after obligatory visit to the pub on the way home (10 miles..) Weather great until around 4 when sky turned dark with a shower or two, but no harm done.

Giant shopping centre, but great fun with the usual fayre; dogs, ponies, falcons, ferrets, fishing, farming, food; so much food and good stuff too if you didn't fancy eating c..p from the usual providers.
Saw Hywell Thingy and his daughter; the lads from the BT Sport angling programme; James something who won the fishing comp run by Matt Hayes (on the BBC?); chatted with a few of these, and good blokes they were too; so enthusiastic.
My favourite display, the falconry, was difficult due to the breeze but excellent, and the kids doing the pony club stuff were unbelievably good.

And yep, they turned up in their 1000's, and no reason to think the weekend won't be well attended although the weather forecast again isn't great.

Finally, I really must visit Hatfield House; the one and only previous was 50 years ago on a school trip. It looks beautiful; the Estate certainly is.

    Regards,

Forgot to mention; the farriers making a couple of horse shoes from scratch. Ridiculously hard work, which is obviously why most are now imported from far away places. Great to watch.

I've got to agree on Delray that the show is popular. At £27 entry (kids under 8 free) on the gate it is pricey (probably less of an issue for the half dozen+ people who had parked their helicopters while I was there) but it has a real buzz. It is huge. I saw a talk on a golden eagle but would have been surprised if they could really demo what any of the birds they had there are capable of. The ferrets looked interesting and my mate's kids were thrilled with all the "monster trucks" etc. But the kids entertainment was a small fortune generally.

Re the fishing - two casting pools, a few destination stores, veniard's tying stand, Orvis and a few other tackle retailers... Hwel Morgan was there (what a gent and so generous with his advice (as was Richard Burnage of Orvis)) and I suspect one or two of the other casting maestros.

There may have been more to do but having paid my entry I was more than a little miffed that it didn't come with a free programme listing exhibitors, demonstrations and a map.

Will I go again... if I'm feeling flush and have nothing to do on the Friday and /or have a designated driver. I imagine the weekend would be so busy it would hell on earth - even on the Friday there were I suspect thousands of cars. But overall it is more for the hunting/ horsey crowd I suspect.

    Cheers
    Richard
