    Default Birmingham pike fly fishing

Just wanted to know if anyone else is in the Birmingham area as I have never seen or met anybody else using fly gear for pike when I'm out and feel like I'm the only one. (I can't be the only one)

I have just spent this mid-week fishing for Zander on the Fly near Stratford upon Avon. I was fishing the Canal just north of the Town on the Lure Anglers stretch. The water was like oxtail soup but I still managed to catch two fine fish of around 2lb in weight. I used was a high vis pike fly with a small rattle attached fished on a six weight outfit. I had intended to fish the river but it was too high and fast for pike or Zander fishing. The locals of Stratford tell me their are lots of Zander along the whole stretch of canal right into the depths of the midlands. Worth having a go. The Lure Anglers club day tickets are available on line for just a 5 a day.

I fish all the oldbury, titford, westbrom,Walsall,Wolverhampton canals as often as I can for pike on the fly. Some good fish are there to be had ranging from about 30cm to torpedos I don't bother to weigh what I catch as that's never interested me don't care about bragging rights and that sort of thing. Almost all the water is mucky brown with some of the best fish found in the worst looking water.

I watched an old fellow fish for pike over a weedy stretch of canal with a foam and feather fly on the surface.

Would that be dry fly fishing for pike, Dryfly pete........

Don't think it counts as a dry when your popper fishing but it's close

no you are not the only one. i mainley lure fish but on occations if i know i can get a back cast in i will take the pike fly rod.not many places on the canal for a #9 side cast maybe, wouldnt even dream of using a #6 for pike or zeds wire leader would be to heavy.
i dont fish the lacc stretch plenty of other places on the canal free of charge.
have a look at the lure anglers society thay have a midlands chapter and they prob get out once or twice a mth and fish all over the birmingham areas most of us have a BAA ticket and they have lots of water to pike fly fish , we are going to rudyard this sunday and i will take the fly rod then.

They are in the shallows with their backs out of the water - hens with jacks alongside still too. I was going to give it another 3 weeks before I ventured back there.

Depends on how heavy you are going for a leader. 12-20 lb trace is light enough to cast on a 6wt. My local canal pike average weight if 2-3lb and a big one is 10lb using a 60LB trace is just massive overkill and would rule out perch.
