Default Some Pike recommendations please, good people...

I've just got myself a Pike outfit and this year finally I'm gonna get round to some Pike on the fly this winter. A couple of things I need some help with if I may: What do you suggest for leaders and where's a good place to buy Pike flies from?

    Thanks in advance,

    Skaj

Hi skaj, for the leader try 5/6 foot of 18/20 lb flouro loop to loop to the fly line, I use partridge knottable wire in 26 lb it’s very supple and behaves just like stiff nylon. I tie a surgeons loop in the wire (around 18 inch’s) and either a jam knot to the fly or a fastach clip, (I prefer the jam knot but it’s no good if you want to change flies a lot. For flies try mcfluffchucker, he sells them through his blog, or tie some up it’s easy tying huge flies.

Pretty much as said above. I rarely use more than 9' total length of leader so that the knot never goes through the tip ring. I normally tie my choice of trace direct to the leader (20lb b/s fluorocarbon) and have a snap link on the trace for quick fly changes.

Fly size something around 5-6" on a strong 4/0 hook (Sakuma 420 or 545) is my mainstay with plenty of flash. If you gets lots of plucks and pulls with no hook ups then you may want to go down to a 3" fly.

If fishing rivers, focus on the margins as that's where most fish tend to lie although obviously they could be anywhere and unless shallow or very deep, an intermediate line should be your mainstay.

The flies I use are around 6 to 8 inch’s long. I believe large flies will catch smaller fish if the big hens are not taking but have never had much luck with small flies and big fish. Pike are ambush predators and like Iain said they lie in margins, although they do cruise aswell, sometimes into quite deep water. Most of the time though they chill in the weeds/reeds/under trees/holes and the like then dart out to take weak or injured fish, a synthetic perch/roach or jack pike imitation should see you alright. Synthetics are lighter and shed water better so are far nicer to cast.

I tie and have bought flies tied on mostly 4/0, 5/0 and 6/0 hooks, I use partridge Ad Swier barbless in 4/0 and Sakura manta (barbs crushed) in 5/0 mostly. Both hooks are very strong and easy to remove.

Poppers are worth a try in shallower water and as close to the reed beds as you dare go, visual takes are incredible.

Looks like we pretty much agree which is always feels a little unusual on the forum

I've not toed with those partridge hooks as the point looks to be very short. Have you had any trouble with them or do they perform consistently - gotta be easier than removing the barbs on the others!

    Cheers,
    Iain

They are good hooks Iain, I know what your saying about the points but it’s a dropped point so the point goes through flesh and round to the bend kind of thing, the hook hold is no different than any other to be honest. They are nice and easy to remove and like you say de barbing 5/0 or 6/0 hooks is not that nice a task.

It is getting more unusual to agree I must agree
