Thread: Barbel on a fly

Steve Collett used to fish for them on the upper Severn with fly - he had them on dry fly as well as nymphs. I have never even seen one, not even one caught by other people, only pictures, but we have good barbel rivers in my club portfolio - but people use bait tactics and sit all night to try and catch one. One member had a 19lber last year, or the year before.... there are god ones and it is something I would like to try and catch someday, bait fishing not fly fishing, first.

I've had four on the fly in total, all from a river located not too far from London. Alongside mullet, barbel at this year's target species.

They are dogged fighters and the technique used to catch them is very, very simple.... just trundle a nymph along the bottom!
