    Default Barbel on a fly

I was just wondering, how many of you fish for a barbel with a flyrod. Here are two videos of me having fun with them on a nymph and streamer. Any fellow anglers who also enjoy fishing for them with a flyrod?

Is that the same barbel that we have in the UK (Barbus barbus)?

I've got some leaded hares ear nymphs tied up in case I ever spot any, but never had any opportunity to try them out yet.

BTW, I watched your other video's. You've got some balls going in to those power plant out flow tunnels. Loved it.

Once hooked one in a French river, didn't manage to land it even though it was hooked almost under the rod tip. Would love to have another try, but I've not got the kit with me this trip.

Barbel is a good fighter on a fly rod, no matter what type of nymph as long as it's (really) heavy. i really enjoy hooking one of them.Barbel on a fly-dscn2950-jpgBarbel on a fly-photos-065-jpgBarbel on a fly-photos-069-jpg

I hate them - if you aren't concentrating and they take-and-spit you sometimes hook them somewhere other than the mouth and hauling a fish in like that is simply barbaric. Even if you do hook them correctly they tend to hug the bottom and its just a battle of attrition.

I've caught barbel on fly (peeping caddis) in the Spanish Pyrenees but they looked a little different to UK barbel. They were harder to fool than trout!
“There is no more lovely country than Monmouthshire in early spring. Nowhere do the larks sing quite so passionately, as if somehow inspired by the Welsh themselves. There is a blackbird on every thorn and a cock chaffinch, a twink as they call him there, on every bush...... It moved me profoundly. I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”

Hard enough to catch on meat or pellets where I fish but they are usually doubles when you do catch. Would be interesting on a #5 rod and line.
