Thanks for in depth reply blueone...
I learned today that it's not just the weight that's important but where it is placed, I've a barrio slx and a rio 225 grain single handed skagit line both are 15 grams.
The SLX is 15g over 30ft and the skagit is 15g over 18ft I tried both the lines with the biggest pike fly I have 4" long and fairly wind resistant.
The slx just didn't turn over the taper is to fine it also didn't have the same line speed as the the rio line it could be shot 60/65ft and turn over nicely without much effort?

I've ordered a 9wt wf that I'm going to cut back the taper aiming for something that feels more like the skagit line only integrated?

I've got a stripping basket but tbh I've never been too keen on using it but I'll give it a chance.

    Any advice or opinions welcome?
    Al

To be honest, i would go with a heavier line, but it also depends on the flies you are going to use. I hope you got an aggressive WF, so as close as possible to ahooting head. I do cut down lines for pike, but with heavier heads to create specilised tackel for confined spaces, like here. The line used is cut down RIO Leviathan 500:

Hi blueone the flies in the photo above is what I'll be using there 4" long.

    Aggressive taper absolutely...
the taper is getting cut back on the 9wt, with 4/5 maybe 6 feet cut off the line it is nearer a 10wt at 17/18 grams depending on whats cut off the taper.

Ideally I'm trying to keep it fish able with a 9.6ft 7wt or a second choice 11ft 7/8 switch rod.

    Thanks Al
