No reason why not...a nice sunny day, reasonably calm, you'll catch carp. They have to eat, so yes...go for it. And good luck...

I made it my mission a few years ago to catch a carp on the fly in every month of the year. I managed every month except January, it was a particularly cold year. But I have caught carp off the top in other Januaries, so i consider it job done. You're best off finding a relatively shallow lake where and focusing on warmer days. Never give in either, on several trips I'd feed a good number of biscuits but only get one rise the whole time I was there, to my fly. Why they pick it out I don't know but they do! Always a chance one fish will look up!

What are your favoured flies and leaders for carp? Does it change in the winter at all?

Very simple, just a deer hair dog biscuit flies with a few free offerings, same tactics just less freebies in winter. For leaders I use drennan supplex leaders between 6 and 8 lb. Anything that is strong and not too stiff will work fine. Scale up if you expect bigger fish. Average weight on my lake is around 6-8lb

OK, thanks I will get some of those flies. Just noticed that you are in Cambridge so it might be a venue that I know!

Probably not, its a small club and only has one small lake, its not well known outside the local area. Where abouts are you? Can show you the ropes sometime perhaps? Can give you a few flies too. Very simple to tie a few up

I'm in Newmarket, but have lived in Sawston and Chatteris. That is a very kind offer - I may take you up on that when there is a bit more activity. I'm a member of a syndicate with a good head of double figure carp that I can get guest tickets for....

Yes probably better to wait til it warms up a bit for better prospects. My lake does day tickets and is a great place for an intro to carp on the fly.
