Default Coarse fishing (not pike) - on still water over the closed season

    Hi All,

I have put my fly rod aside and been lure fishing for pike over the winter.
Now that the coarse season is closed on rivers and the sun is getting a bit warmer I'm itching to get back out to fly fishing on still waters.

However, I only started fishing last September and haven't fished for coarse fish on still waters before.

What set-up would you use? A dry-dropper rig?
Any advice on technique? As there won't be any water flow... not sure if there's any special considerations to take into account.

    All and any advice welcome!
    Thanks!!

Do you mean fishing for coarse fish on stillwaters or stocked trout?

I'm sorry i can't offer much help, the closest I've got to fly fishing for coarse fish is catching perch and 1 pike on my club water.
The pike was caught with a orange lure and the perch are caught regularly with nymphs and wets.

It depends what species you are after really:

Rudd will take dry flies, static or twitched
Roach will take buzzers as they descend or on a painfully slow retrieve along the bottom
I know you said no pike, but what about Perch? Small Perch (AKA wasps) will take just about any fly on a jerky retrieve, but prefer anything red.

What still waters do you have access to? A small clear pond would need very different tactics to a dirty, boat filled canal (and I can't speak for a reservoir).

    Generally:
Go lighter than trout fishing, I use either a 1# or 3# rod and line with a straight through 3lb leader. Size 18 to 12 flies.
I only ever use a single fly.
Match the hatch. Think about what fish are present and read up on their diet.
Dom Garnett's book 'Fly Fishing for Coarse Fish' is where I got started, a lot of his fishing is canal based.

Finally, be ready for anything, I recently landed an 8lb Carp on a 1# fly rod. It had taken a size 14 GRHE.

    Cheers Jerryrum!

    Great advice!!
I only said no to pike because I haven't got a rod to cope with them. The biggest I have is a 5#.
    Perch is definitely an option.

    Thanks for the advice!
Just got to get out there and try it out now!
