Default Which still water to try near-ish Cambridge

    Hi All,

I know this is a long shot...
My bro's coming over this week-end from Australia to try and catch some pike on a fly.
I live in Cambridge... so can anyone recommend any venues which has the holy combo of quite a few pike and not stupidly hard to cast out from?

    Cheer!

The fens.....plenty of places to walk and fish. The further you walk from where you can park, the less pressure it will have had from the salad workers!

How far are you willing to travel? Rutland, and take a boat - intermediate line and a good baitfish pattern, you won't necessarily need a weighted fly, but a little weight at the head does give a good diving action on the pause. Not so much a weighted fly - an epoxy head is sufficient. I prefer that to proper weighted heads, they dive too fast to look natural. I use a Rio striperline intermediate and can get down to weed depth in 20 feet of water, you just need to be prepared to count to 50 or so. If you are drifiting in deeper water (in the heat the pike will go deeper to be more comfortable) a 350 gn depth charge gets down 30 feet or so in about 20 seconds.

Pitsford isn't far from you either - but again, stump up for a boat, it will increase your chances 10 fold.

Rutland looks like a good option... If I'm driving, I'll get my bro to stump up for the boat!

    Cheers!!

Need a 3rd hand? I can supply pike flies and traces. You will need a #8 really, minimum a #10 is better, for delivering the flies, not necessarily for playing the fish.

Ended up going to Grantham water.
1/2 day on the boat moving around a bit... I blanked but my brother caught a nice pike!
    So mission accomplished!!
