    Default The North Country Fly.

Anyone bought this book by Robert L. Smith? Being a spider fanatic it's one on my wanted list but just wondered if anyone has it and what they thought, think it's only recently come out.

    cheers

'The North Country Fly: Yorkshire's Soft Hackle Tradition' is due to be launched at the show on Saturday, Mark. I believe Matt (NCA) will be sharing his thoughts with us here, shortly after he's procured a copy...

I wondered how he kept himself busy since The Cure have largely faded out of the limelight

Ah thanks for that Rob, will be interesting to hear Matt's verdict on the book, a man who knows his stuff.

    Arrived this morning.
On first glance , it would appear to be a beautifully presented volume.

Agree, received my (signed - that was a surprise) copy today and look forward to reading it in detail. Photographs of flies by Rob Denson (Scratch on here). With this and the scholarly Leslie Magee book it pretty much covers the subject I'd say......

The photos of the 'period' flies in this book (and in articles by the author in FF&FT) are very interesting - they could be described as heavily hackled by today's Spartan "one turn" or "eight legs" standards. I have commented on this before on here and FFTF Forum.

Whilst sparse patterns have their day, I do like a bit of 'meat' to me spiders myself....and the fish don't seem to mind

It's going to be my birthday present to myself. I only have to decide on whether it will be the £25 hardback or the £795 leather bound deluxe edition. Decisions. Decisions.

I do agree with you Caddis Fan about spiders needing some meat on them. 8 barbs is ridiculous. Eleven is the correct number.
