Any modern book will do. They are all much the same.
Even an old one will do if you think he may not be interested in this week's infallible fly.

And they all just repeat the same things. After all, there is only a limited amount that can be said about catching a trout.

That statement makes me wonder if you've ever "actually" fished for trout in a variety of still waters, at different times of year and in a range of conditions or whether you've just read a book or two.

Tom Ivens book "Still Water Fly-Fishing" ....old but excellent and Gordon Fraser " Mastering The Nymph"....not as old but good. These books would stand anybody in good stead. Of course they are not up on modern tackle but everything else is true today and without the bullsh1t.

Sounds more like a sad, cynical, jaded old man if you ask me.

    Yes I have.

Mostly, but not entirely, Chew and Blagdon, where I suspect Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss are much the same as everywhere else. In addition to those bigger places, the occasional small 'put and take' lakes.

These writers are merely fairly short-lived (who reads Tommy Ivy now?) magazine 'experts' paid by the word, some of whom decide to try and make a little extra money by writing a book.

And if their books varied significantly a lot of them must be 'wrong'

    Cynical and jaded, yes.

As for ''sad' it is very common to ascribe that label to anyone you disagree with, so I treat that tired cliché with the contempt it deserves.

So somewhat 'jaded and cynical' I will admit, as I have been fly fishing for 50 years. It's no big deal after that time. And only fools say 'awesome!' to supposed 'new' stuff, much of which has been done many times before. We laugh at these constant 'new brooms' falsely thinking they know everything or have much to add. Fly fishing is not exactly rocket science.

And whether you like it or not these books are all much the same.

But if you are buying a book, it being fairly 'new' does no harm. And you only need one as reading several 'instruction manuals', all on basically the same subject, becomes very dull.

I totally agree. Particularly about the modern BS. It's all become so 'commercialised'.

'Ivens'. Yes. He was a noted orchid grower too. It was from memory, I was confusing him with a 1960s racing motorcyclist

It wasn't meant as a derogatory remark, you do come across as a sad person. I sincerely hope I'm wrong...

Many of the so called "bibles" for fly fishing reservoirs are outdated as many are turning over to "any method", a pity, but that is the way it is going.

I you said 'bored' I would agree.

Our season doesn't start till first May and after 15 years, the wife, though fine initially, has lost much of her appeal, as, apparently, have I. And the vegetable patch need digging if we are to get any runner beans
