    Default Today's Flyfisher

Happened to look in a newsagent this morning and noticed a new magazine, Today's Flyfisher, the second issue, £6.99. Anyone seen it? It's a fat glossy, as you'd expect at that price, full of advert articles by logo-encrusted blokes who are ambassadors for this or that company. So lot's of 'my Orvis ftang G10 performed brilliantly as the fish ...' and 'the fly line was nearly all gone off my Airflow Razorblade K3..'

    As you'll gather, I don't recommend it.

It's certainly one business model for a print publication in 2019 and quite possibly a more effective one than traditional models. On the positive, the production and photography is very good but I found the writing more variable and, yes, the endless branding starts to irritate.

However, just learned that Issue 15 of Fallon's angler has gone to press, much better read IMHO.

I thought it was just me but all of the articles are full of hype for the writers sponsors. I wouldn't think that there's any chance of an impartial review. The editor is Andy Taylor who used to edit Total Flyfisher. I went right off it when I saw the bloke who bid a rod of mine up on e bay and then didn't pay me in one of the features.

I don't think it can be selling very well as the second edition came out in early December with the 3rd one due any time now (it's published quarterly).

Fly Culture is a far better read.

Today's Flyfisher - the magazine sounds awful, it won't last long. I'm eagerly awaiting the next edition of Fly Culture, no adverts. None :-)

I bought the first issue of Today’s Flyfisher but shan’t be buying anymore as it didn’t impress. Fly Culture and Fallon’s Angler both get my vote. I have also just taken out a years subscription to an American magazine “the Drake” which I’m looking forward to reading.
    Kind regards,

I think The Drake is a superb read, however, have found it will make you incredibly envious of open access to rivers, and especially small streams, in the American West!

Given up on fly fishing magazines including T&S learn more in real life talking to fellow anglers and sifting their information. More adverts than information.
The articles i will miss by not buying are by North Country angler ( Matt ) a real wealth of knowledge and experience but again just my opinion.

I don't mind adverts when they are that but I do object to the amount of product promotion that goes on in the actual text of articles.
I have just bought the March edition of Trout Fisherman and out of 100 pages there are 17 pages of adverts. Surely this is enough without promoting products within the articles.

I gave up a deer stalking magazine for the same reasons, a quite ridiculous amount of product placement in the narrative that totally destroyed any pleasure in reading it.

A quick look through the XYZ 8x42 binos revealed a pin sharp image of the stag and having used the 12x zoom function on my DEF scope my ABC rifle in .270win I squeezed the beautifully light RST trigger and sent the GHI nylon tipped 100 grain round direct to its target. Please!!

“There is no more lovely country than Monmouthshire in early spring. Nowhere do the larks sing quite so passionately, as if somehow inspired by the Welsh themselves. There is a blackbird on every thorn and a cock chaffinch, a twink as they call him there, on every bush...... It moved me profoundly. I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”
