Default Yorkshire's brown trout fishing season gets under way

    Source: EA Press Release

Fisheries staff at the Environment Agency are reminding anglers in Yorkshire that the brown trout fishing season starts/started on Sunday (25 March).

Over the last few decades there has been a major increase in trout populations, largely due to the great improvements in water quality in our rivers, and more and more anglers are fishing for this species.

The brown trout fishing season runs through spring and summer, with the final day being September 30.

Peter Mischenko, Environment Agency fisheries officer in Yorkshire, said: “We hope as many people as possible get out and enjoy our rivers by fishing them.

“But people must be in possession of a valid licence for two rods when doing so.

“Anglers fishing for trout in our rivers are only legally allowed to use natural or artificial flies, minnow, worm, shrimp, sand eel or artificial lure as bait, until 16 June when the coarse fish season opens.”

Angling close seasons are to protect fish while they are spawning, to ensure that they have a chance to produce the next generation to maintain a sustainable population and enabling good angling to continue.

The trout close season runs from 1 October to 24 March, inclusive. Trout prefer fast, cold and clear waters and they usually spawn at the head of rivers, and then may return to the lower reaches.

The coarse fish close season runs from 15 March to 15 June, inclusive. Coarse fish generally prefer warmer, stiller waters and so during the coarse fish spawning period there may also be trout present which have completed spawning.

If an angler accidentally catches a coarse fish it should be returned to the water immediately and the angler should try to ensure that it does not happen again.

Mr Mischenko added: “Our job is to protect fish stocks and improve fisheries. This includes rescuing fish in distress, improving habitat and restocking rivers with 450,000 fish a year. The majority of anglers, who fish legally, rightly demand that we take action to catch offenders.

“Our bailiffs are out patrolling watercourses, and anyone caught flouting these laws could face prosecution in the courts.

“We urge anyone to report illegal fishing as quickly as possible by calling our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”

Last year the Environment Agency Enforcement Officers ran 670 close season patrols, reporting 122 anglers for illegally fishing in the close season.

Annual rod licences expire at the end of March, and the maximum fine for angling without a licence or out of season is 2,500.

Anyone who wants to go fishing needs to buy a fishing licence. A full annual licence costs 30 (short term and some concessionary licences are also available) and are available online at www.gov.uk/get-a-fishing-licence.

Peter forgot to add that a single licence only allows one to use one rod for trout fishing or up to two rods for coarse fish. If one wants to use two rods for trout fishing e.g. bait fishing or trolling then one must possess two licences (rules of the water to be fished permitting such)

Guys this is interesting. I am from Holland so English is not my best skill so please let me check ... I m planning a fly fishing trip to the Yorkshire dales for fishing in rivers like the wharfe from June 14th. This means we can only fish until June 16th because trout season closes?

    Thanks
    Marco

Another additional question: I am looking for a different weekend to fish in Yorkshire dales: 31 May till June 4th.

Is this maybe too early in the season for trout or is this usually ok?

    Thanks.

Those dates are absolutely perfect . If you need any advice on travel , hotels , fishing permits etc , just ask . There are quite a few regulars on here who fish the Yorkshire Dales rivers

Imarco, have a look at this advice given to a Belgian Angler who enquired about fishing trout rivers in England a couple of years ago:
