Bang on. If you post something that challenges someones long held beliefs they jump down your throat with both barrels blazing. But that is true of most internet forums. The remoteness of the trolls empowers them. Apart from an angry response online, which most of them are hoping for anyway, thats the limit of the reaction to them. Not one of them would say these kind of things face to face. This poor bloke doesnt need anyone to point this out even if most of do find it unusual that he wasnt insured. Thats called being a thoughtful, compassionate human being

Like you, Cap'n Fishy and they other sympathetic types who have expressed themselves here, I have no time for the sanctimonious, spiteful drivel posted here by one uncharitable, self-righteous creature. There are too many of his type in angling circles. Let this be said: Stan had a very bad experience with an insurance claim before, which put him off insurers. And that I can completely understand, having had to threaten my own insurers with immediate court action in respect of a claim before they coughed up. Insurers are not your friends. They and their loss adjuster foot soldiers seem to me to regard their role in life as being simply to fillet your wallet. And the point about car insurance is irrelevant. You have to have car insurance by law.

I said I would post Stan's new address here, but now I have decided not to do so, because I think there is a risk of hate mail, so I shall PM it instead to all who have shown decent compassion for the man.

Yes that cheaper but I'm amazed those guys had the brass balls to put a photo of that online. (I wonder if we could apply the same logic to rods ) (Edit - Or this monstrosity Kingfisher Butcher Wet Fly - Dragonflies zoom in on the head, poor wings, thread showing at the tail - tail not in proportion and rib not uniform). It is worth paying a bit more for the only bit of equipment the fish should see (unless you are prone to falling in the river).
I agree with every word, lewism. And may I offer, very tentatively, some advice? Buy your flat gold tinsel from Mayo Flycraft - Peter Wildash, 86 Pinehurst Road, West Moors, Ferndown, Dorset BH22 0AR. Stan swears by it.

That's right, MB. I visited Stan last week and he was in fine form, freely dispensing his advice on various aspects of fishing. His stock of fly-tying gear has now been almost completely replenished by well-wishers who are humbled by, and will always be grateful for, the enormity of his contribution to their enjoyment of angling, particularly on the lochs of Scotland. I am certainly in that category.

I am sure Stan now wants to "move on", to adopt a rather imperative phrase from current parlance. And I am also certain he has much more ink to spill, giving advice to us lesser mortals. But it is time to lift the mood, and if you want a laugh, have a look at Stan's account of my visit on his Facebook entries. I'll say no more!

It's nice to hear this sad story had a happy ending.
It restores my faith in humanity.
Well done you guys and a pox on you others.
Yes, I do heartily repent. I repent I had not done more mischief; and that we did not cut the throats of them that took us, and I am extremely sorry that you aren't hanged as well as we.

I am indeed referring to the dogs, mattybhoy.

I drove all the way back to Edinburgh from Wormit, and the dog followed me into the kitchen. Now, our dog usually goes straight to his bed, but this one stood wagging (her) tail. It was at this point that my wife said "That's not out dog!"

To explain this mishap, which produced great merriment all round as can be imagined, I would conjecture that Stan's *****, Twist, liked his (Gatsby's) scent in my car, while Gatsby liked her scent in her bed. Anyway, when I phoned Stan to tell him, he burst out laughing, only then realising that he was stroking my dog and not his own. And when he posted the photo of the two of them on Facebook, a member of his own family picked the wrong dog. So I don't feel quite so stupid...….and we all had a good laugh anyway. There were many amusing replies to Stan's post on Facebook but my favourite was "Should have gone to Specsavers" !
