Re: DEFRA consultation on shooting cormorants needs YOU!
I have been aware of the whole 2 subspecies thing and the inland v coastal differences for a long time, due to all the discussion on this forum.
I Googled those links I posted. There are plenty more where they came from. I just Googled the inland subspecies, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, and got 230,000 hits.
This one...
https://www.ornisfennica.org/pdf/latest/5Beike.pdf
... references the source of the Chinese 'sinensis' name coming from folklore - Dutchmen brought them from China to use for fishing 'the Chinese way'. But apparently this was not an alien introduction of the subpecies to Europe, as is often claimed to give support to wanting to exterminate them all.
My bird book, Collins' Bird Guide, does mention the sinensis subspecies. It references it nesting in trees and/or on the ground or in reed beds on lakes.

My Campbells Dictionary of Birds only gives carbo as a Eurasian spp, marine coastal in Europe and in inland waters from the Danube south, but there you go, that's all I have on it
