Default Patagonia Stealth hip pack

Not an in-depth review, more of a recommendation for this hip pack.

Having previously been wedded (welded almost) to my Brady Ariel Trout shoulder bag, I thought I'd try a waist pack this year - reasons being: I thought it would be easier to change layers, especially on the water (wading), without having to slip a shoulder bag off; and I although I was loathe to be critical of my trusty Brady, it forms (collapses even) to the body when worn, which in some ways is nice, but it also makes it difficult to work out of.

The hip pack is beautifully made and looks nice to my eyes - with no fancy graphics to spoil its simplicity. The waist band is nicely padded so you barely notice you're wearing it. There is a shoulder strap, but I've never used it, so that gets tucked away into an outer pocket behind the padding. There are two bottle holders each with elastic lanyards to secure the bottle tops - I keep floatant and nippers in one and sometimes a bottle in the other.

The main compartment takes two reels and possibly an extra spool, but it's not a transit bag, so I tend to carry a spare spool only and I've been able to stuff a lightweight waterproof in there too. There are dividers (in both compartments) for license, permits, maps and so on. The front pocket/compartment, which cantilevers outwards to about 45 degrees, has a ribbed foam panel for flies, which I don't use and I wouldn't recommend it for dry flies anyway, but I can get the largest C&F (190mm x 40-ish mm) fly box in there comfortably.

I like being able to swivel the bag around easily when wading and being able to rest the rod on it while working (changing fly etc). Unlike the shoulder bag, the compartments retain their shape when worn; the padded waist band forms to the body without any crushing of the compartments.

During the hot summer months it's been nice not to have a shoulder bag and strap pressing against your shirt and making you even hotter.

It's taken a few months for me to realise how much I like this little bag, but then I think that's down to how discreet and easy it is to live with - you take it for granted and forget you're wearing it... which is a good thing.

For carrying a relatively minimal amount of gear and stealthy river fishing, I think it's perfect. It's the best fishing accessory I've ever bought.

I have the Stealth Atom Sling Pack, it's excellent, I'd highly recommend it . It's a bit like a Tardis, there's much more room inside than you'd expect. Funny, I was thinking I might get the hip pack too.
